The 5mm Remington Magnum started out as a rimfire back in 1970.  Two different rifles were made for it...a clip fed Model 591 and a tubular fed Model 592.  The rifles were made until 1973 when they were discontinued by Remington.  The ammunition was made for several more years, but then it was discontinued also.  What ammunition that is left on the market has become more collectible than shootable, as a 50 round box can cost as much as $80.00.  The original price was $3.00.

Therefore, the rifles have become almost useless because ammunition has not been available.

Then came the conversion, which consists of a new bolt head with a centerfire firing pin rather than a rimfire firing pin.  The brass is made from 22 Hornet brass swedged down to 5mm specs and shortened.  I read about the conversion just a little over a year ago and thought this would be a GREAT project.  It took almost a year to locate a rifle.

Once located, it took another 3 months to come up with the where-with-all to buy the conversion kit, RCBS dies, converted brass and 100 bullets.

The target here was 5 shots at 25 yards using a 33 grain Hornady Bullet with 5.5 grain H110 Powder Charge at 2,113 FPS.  It has been more fun developing a accurate load for this rifle.

On the Model 591 that I have, the stock pictured above is not the original.  It was made by David Alegre who has done this type of work in the past and he customized the stock to my measurements.  It is a beautiful piece of Black Walnut that just looks great with the rifle.

Here's another website on the 5mm.  It's what started me on the project.  Of course, I will be adding to this as I develop more loads and work the rifle out to 100 yards.
